Title : "The Art, Science, and Engineering of Music"
Date : 28th August, 2012 - Tuesday*
Time : 4:00pm -5:30pm
Venue : Golden Jubilee Hall,
Dept. of ECE, IISc, Bangalore
*Abstract:
The art of music has been studied and practised for
centuries. In the last century, the science of music developed,
with musicologists studying music systematically using
a scientific approach.
Engineering of music is now emerging -
Music Technology is the new multidisciplinary field,
which uses the tools available to engineers to develop specific
tools for understanding, analysis, and synthesis of music.
This talk addresses such an engineering
approach to music analysis. Music Information Research (MIR) draws
from several fields such as signal processing, machine learning,
computer science,
psychology, and musicology.
This talk will discuss a few MIR applications with
which I have been closely associated with.
In specific, Multiple Viewpoint
Modeling and Rhythm Modeling in the context of
Indian classical music
will be discussed in detail.
Multiple viewpoint models can be used for melody
continuation. Rhythm models aim to extract useful rhythm
related information such as the pulse, beat, and phrases
from music. Using the new set of MIR tools, we can develop several
new and interesting applications which aim to create a novel
experience with music for both musicians and the audience. These
applications bring music making to the common man and puts it
in a social context,
enhancing our collective experience with music.
